283: Discover Your Unique Genius to Build Meaningful Work with Casey Berman

When I sat down with Casey Berman for this week’s conversation, I knew listeners were in for a treat. Casey has spent nearly two decades helping people discover what he calls their “unique genius,” those natural talents and abilities that often go unnoticed, yet hold the key to building meaningful careers. What struck me most was how Casey’s own path embodies the very lessons he now shares with others.

Casey grew up in San Francisco and followed the advice he heard repeatedly as a kid: “You should be a lawyer.” Without questioning too deeply, he went off to law school, only to find himself struggling to connect with the work. While he finished and passed the bar, he already knew the traditional legal path wasn’t for him. That realization marked the beginning of a journey filled with experimentation, risk, and surprising opportunities.

One of the turning points came when Casey joined a startup during the early 2000s. Though he wasn’t sure how his skills would translate, his new colleagues quickly showed him how valuable his communication and problem-solving abilities were. He hadn’t called it “unique genius” yet, but this was the moment he realized that strengths don’t always appear on a résumé, they often show up in how we connect with others and create value in unexpected ways.

Over the years, Casey blended legal expertise, business development, operations, and consulting into a multi-dimensional career. Alongside that, he launched Leave Law Behind, first as a blog and later as a coaching platform, to support attorneys ready for change. Today, his work has expanded to include professionals of all backgrounds, helping them uncover their invisible skills and align them with fulfilling opportunities.

Casey believes in taking leaps, even when the outcome isn’t certain. Whether it was leaving a corporate role, moving his family to Maui, or launching an AI-powered coaching tool, he has consistently modeled what it means to trust that “jump and the net will appear.” His story is a reminder that we all have more to offer than we realize, and that when we honor our unique genius, we open doors to new experiences, fantastic learning, and work that is deeply satisfying.

In this week’s Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about:

  • Discover your unique genius. Your most valuable strengths may not be obvious; ask others what they notice in you.

  • Don’t just do what you’re good at, do what you enjoy. Success and fulfillment meet at the intersection of skill and passion.

  • Redefine career paths as multi-dimensional. You don’t have to stay in one lane; your career can reflect many ways of creating value.

  • Do it your own way. Frameworks and advice are useful, but the most authentic and sustainable path is the one that fits you.
