In this episode of Work from the Inside Out, Tammy Gooler Loeb speaks with Deborah Farone, consultant, speaker, former chief marketing officer at two international law firms, and author of Best Practices in Law Firm Business Development and Marketing and Breaking Ground: How Successful Women Partners Build Thriving Practices. Deborah shares the story of how a fascination with marketing and human relationships shaped a long and successful career helping professional service firms grow through trust, authenticity, and strategic business development.
Deborah’s interest in marketing began early. As a child, she was fascinated by how products were positioned, priced, and promoted. That curiosity followed her into college at Boston University, where she immersed herself in advertising and public relations work while actively preparing for her future career. Instead of approaching the job search passively, she created detailed systems to track every outreach effort and persisted even after receiving multiple rejections from a public relations firm. Her creativity and determination ultimately helped her land her first role at Ketchum Public Relations.
As Deborah’s career evolved, she discovered that she was especially drawn to professional services organizations. After gaining experience in public relations and consulting environments, she eventually became the first marketing professional at Debevoise & Plimpton, where she spent 14 years building and leading a marketing department. Later, she moved to Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where she developed a different style of relationship-centered marketing focused on client trust, exceptional service, and long-term reputation. Throughout the conversation, Deborah emphasizes that curiosity and authenticity were central to every stage of her career.
Deborah also reflects on the role mentors played in her professional growth. Leaders invested in her development, encouraged her writing skills, and opened doors for learning opportunities that would later support her work as an author and consultant. She explains that being open about what you want to improve and asking thoughtful questions can create meaningful opportunities for growth. Rather than viewing networking as transactional, Deborah describes it as an ongoing commitment to staying connected, learning from others, and contributing to a broader professional community.
Today, Deborah consults with law firms on marketing strategy, business development, and leadership while continuing to write and speak about relationship-building and career success. Her latest book focuses on helping women develop thriving practices and stronger business development skills. As she shares with Tammy, one of the most important steps in career growth is identifying the work that genuinely energizes you. By paying attention to the projects, experiences, and conversations that bring fulfillment, professionals can make more intentional choices about what comes next.
